Double coat grooming guide
Double coats have a soft insulating undercoat underneath a coarser topcoat. They don't need trimming, but they do need real de-shedding work, especially during spring and fall coat blow, when loose undercoat can mat against the skin if it isn't worked out.

Care and maintenance
Never shave a double coat purely to "help with shedding" without asking a groomer first: the topcoat usually grows back patchy or uneven, and shaving removes the insulation that protects the dog from both heat and cold.
How often to groom
Every 8-12 weeks, with a de-shedding treatment during spring and fall shedding season.
Price impact
A double coat typically adds $16 on top of the base groom price for a dog's size, to account for the extra brushing, bathing, and trim time it needs.
